Tehri Garhwal


Tehri Garhwal is  a district in the hill state of Uttrakhand. Its administrative headquarters is at New Tehri. It is surrounded by Rudraprayag District in the east, Dehradun district in the west, Uttarkashi District in the north and Pauri Garhwal District in the south and, Uttarkashi in the north. Tehri Garhwal is a part of the Himalayas. The native of Tehri are known as Garhwali and Jaunpuri.

The name Tehri has been derived from the word Trihari, signifying a place that  washes away the three type of sins- sins born out of Mana, Vachana and Karma or thought word and deed. Garh in hindi means fort.

 Tehri Garhwal is situated amidst the mountains. This place is very aesthetic. Every year a large number of tourist come to visit here. This place is also very famous as a religious place.

The New Tehri city of Tehri Garhwal has been included in the list of most developed cities in the country. The tallest dam of India is also in Tehri. It is a multi-purpose rock embankment dam on the Baghirathi River.
