Rishikesh, The Yoga Capital





 

Rishikesh is a city of Dehradun distict of the Indian state. It is known as  Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas” and and “Yoga capital of the world”, located  in the foothill of the Himalayas in northern India. It is known as pilgrimage town and regarded as one of the  holiest places to Hindus. Hindu sages and saints have visited Rishikesh since ancient times to mediate in search of higher knowledge and salvation.




According to Mythology, Rama did penance here for killing Ravana and Lakshmana his younger brother the river Ganges using two jute ropes at  the point where the Lakshmana jhula stands today. Rishikesh has been a part of the legendary Kedarkhand. The Kedarkhand of Skanda Purana also mention the existence of Indrakund at this point. The Ganges is one of the most sacred to Hindus, flows through Rishikesh. Here the river leaves the Shivalik hills in the Himalayas and flows into the plains o f northern India. Several temples, ancient and new are along the banks of the Ganges in Rishikesh. Shatrughana Mandir, Bharat Mandir, Lakshmana Mandir establised by Adi Shankaracharya.





The top things to do in Rishikesh are Rafting, admiring the Ganga aarti as soon s the sun starts setting, the Ghats of Rishikesh start getting filled by the crowd who are just there to get a glimpse of the Aarti. The peacful surrounding  and the hymns provide the best comfort to one’s soul.





Rishikesh is primarily famous for its spritual importance. There are number of Yoga Ashramas for practicing meditation. Rishikesh is the beginning of the famous Char Dham Yatra (Gangotri, Yamnotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath). Rishikesh boasts beautiful landscapes and intense sprituality, both which give tourist a plethora of activities to take part in. A trip to the city ain’t too expensive either, you get the food at affordable prices, transport to the city is quite reasonable and you can always stay at budget- friendly accomodation choices.
